October 2006 - T&G features in October Truck & Driver magazine
Hamilton trailer manufacturer, Transport & General Engineering, has put its alloy bulk tipping design under a diet regime with impressive results - weight savings of between 130-200kg, depending on suspension options.
But the programme has not flirted with weight loss to the cost of strength or reliability, says T&G's Mike Stevenson: "Our longstanding original design has been the mainstay of our business, with years of proven success and an excellent residual value for second-hand units. We were determined not to compromise that reputation for the sake of lightness, so the new design took an advanced review of the non-structural component of our trailers".
A good quarter of the weight in any trailer comes from the chassis, bogie and drawbar. These are the areas we chose to work on to reduce weight without compromising the quality, reliability and long working life. By lightening this trailer any further we would jeopardise its strength and longevity, something we are not prepared to do. The design change concentrated on nonstructural elements, leaving the structural strength unaltered".
Among the measures adopted have been the replacement of steel mudguards with bolt-on alloy units which not only save weight but are simple to take off for repair or replacement if damaged. This is an important part of the T&G philosophy, says Mike Stevenson: "We have an active R&M division, which can cater to customers' needs when maintenance is needed or trailers have been damaged".
As an example of the savings achieved, a low-sided 6.7m tipper built to the new design has a tare weight of around 5350kg fitted with steel springs and mechanical suspension components. Air suspension is also an option.
TR Group is a long-standing customer with an order in for the new design. TR's vehicle purchasing and expediting manager, Scott McKeogh, says that his company's experience with the standard T&G design has been very positive, and he welcomed the extra payload capability offered by the lightweight makeover.
